Whether you own a big or small dog, all dogs need to have their daily dose of exercise. Some breeds may need extra attention while older dogs may be a bit slower but all of them still require some physical activity. Lack of exercise will make your dog feel bored, overweight and unhealthy which may result in bad behavior.

How Much Exercise Do They Need?

The amount of exercise your dog needs depends on their size, age, breed and health condition. Smaller breeds such as Chihuahuas, Yorkies, Pugs, Shih Tzus, and Maltese among many others tend to be less active compared to bigger dogs. They require an average of 30 to 60 minutes of daily exercise.

Meanwhile, Terriers are more active and therefore, require more physical activities. Some dogs are okay with walking around the neighborhood while others are content with a couple of games in the backyard.


Short and long-haired Chihuahuas are more susceptible to developing knee problems. Therefore, overweight Chihuahuas are more likely to have knee injuries. The best type of exercise for this breed is to walk them around the neighborhood. They are curious in nature and enjoy looking at interesting views.

Just remember to take small steps because Chihuahuas have tiny feet. 30 minutes of exercise a day is enough physical activity for them. Aside from walking them outdoors, playing indoors is also an alternative solution. Let your Chihuahua run and chase their toys around the house.


Exercising your Pug for at least 20 minutes a day is enough to keep them healthy and engaged. When you’re walking them outdoors, make sure you don’t expose them to too much heat, especially during the hot summer days. Avoid staying under the sun for too long.

Most Pugs do not enjoy the rain. Sometimes they don’t even want to go outside to play, especially when the weather is cold and wet. For winter days, wrap your little buddy in these cute pajamas to keep him warm. Avoid going out when it’s windy outside because it can hurt your Pug’s puppy dog eyes. Another thing to consider when exercising your Pug is to pay attention to their breathing.

Jack Russell Terrier

Jack Russell Terriers are active and full of energy. Therefore, they require at least one to two hours of daily exercise. They are natural born hunters and their instinct is to pursue and explore. So, keep this in mind before you start training them for exercise.

Generally, just like in humans, exercise provides a number of benefits for dogs too.

  1. Improves their physical abilities and overall health
  2. Stimulates their mental health
  3. Minimizes symptoms of bad behavior (boredom, frustration and anxiety)

Your dog’s health is important and you should also get involved in his daily exercise routine. In case, you don’t have time to exercise your dog on a daily basis, you should opt to hire a dog walker or enroll them in a daycare program.

However, make sure you have the time to play with them, especially during weekends. Exercising with your buddy will help strengthen your bond with them.
